Lawmaker Reintroduces South Carolina Sports Betting Bill

Sports wagering apps like DraftKings, FanDuel, and Prize Picks allow players to wager on sports in 38 states. However, they are not available in South Carolina. One lawmaker wants to change that by reintroducing a South Carolina sports betting bill.

According to pay per head bookie reports, this would be South Carolina's third attempt to legalize gambling. Murphy explains that "Money and momentum" are why he brought it back. He estimates that his measure to legalize betting on collegiate and professional sports will bring in $100 million for the state, with 80% of that amount going into the general treasury.

Murphy's measure will be similar to those of Tennessee and North Carolina, two states that have recently entered the casino industry.

South Carolina Sports Betting Bill

The 38 states that have legalized gambling have shared in the $11 billion in tax income generated by the business, totaling more than $2.5 billion. However, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has not approved the sports betting bills. Legal fantasy football app betting is now available to bettors in South Carolina. Including sports betting and fantasy sports is still on Murphy's agenda for the bill.

Even though he is enrolled in a course at the University of South Carolina that focuses on the project, Drew Pechulonis has written a dissertation supporting it. In his paper, he proposes taxing gambling businesses to ensure that the measure passes.

South Carolina is one of the 12 states that has not legalized sports betting, so a new push to do so in the coming months may encounter formidable obstacles despite North Carolina's overwhelming success. Joe Cunningham, a Democratic contender for governor in 2022, used a tried-and-tested strategy to attempt to garner support for the new gaming.

Nevertheless, Republican Henry McMaster was victorious in that race. He was against making gambling legal in a state where the only legal way to gamble is through the state lottery, as there are no casinos or racetracks. His position on the matter "remains unchanged," according to a spokesperson for McMaster, who made a similar statement just a few weeks ago.

Despite never gaining traction in the state senate, the House of Representatives supported a bipartisan measure that would have legalized internet betting on horse races, encouraging proponents. Another law suggested mobile sports betting on collegiate and professional sports, with most proceeds going to the state's General Fund.
